It may not work. Here's the thing: I have a region-free DVD player. It'll play just about anything (there are some recordable DVDs that give it trouble) it seems to work well, or, rather, it seemed to work well until about a week ago when it just...stopped. There was a DVD in there and I couldn't even get the thing to turn on so I could take the disc out. (It was The Best of James.)

I unplugged it and plugged it back in to a couple of different outlets, I tried opening it and turning it on with the remote control and with the buttons on the front. Nothing. So I ordered another DVD player from the internet and it got here today. I hooked it up and it works and Im happy and hooray, right?

Well, then, just for a lark, I plugged the old DVD player into the wall (in an outlet that I had already tried before), pressed the "open" button and the damned thing opened. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

So, Tommy's happy, because he can watch that damned train again, and I'm happy because I have apparently one more region-free DVD player than I need, and you can be happy if you want to old one.

Now, there are no guarantees that this thing is going to work. Once I discovered that it opened, I was too done with the whole thing to hook it back up and test it out again. SIDE NOTE: Nothing in the world gets me as fucking frustrated and ready to kill everything ever than hooking up audio/video equipment. Crawling around plugging in RCA cables and coaxial whatever whatever bullshit blah blah blah makes me want to fight the world (I would lose) but I digress.

Do you want it? It's a JVC XV-N310 and it had a remote control, and it probably works.

I don't think I want money for this thing, because I don't want to take anyone's money for something that might work. If you have some candy or a record or something cool that I may want to have that you don't want anymore, we can work something out.

Honestly, I may like it better than the new one because the new one makes it a little harder to skip over all the bullshit commercials that DVDs have at the beginning of them now. Whatever.

You want it?

We're back in Helsinki for one last night. Tomorrow at the crack of dawn (which cracks very very early here in Finland) we're off again. Parris returns to Ireland, and I head home to the cats, the green chile, and A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. We'll meet again in Montreal. Ah, the jet set life...

Estonia was great, and Turku was fun as well. I hope to write more about all these places once I'm home.

Thanks for all my Finnish friends, new and old, for making this is awonderful trip. Finncon rocks.

I will not be attending the show whatsoever on Wednesday or Sunday, sorry.

Here's what we'll have at my Oni signings: two new t-shirts, new button packs, limited-edition prints from TCAF, all the books, and I'll bring as much artwork as I can.

(If you have specific page requests for original art, leave them in the comments or hit me on Twitter and I'll try to accomodate you! Note that a lot of the "good" pages from vols 1-3 have been sold over the years. Prices will start from about $200.)

Things I'm not sure we'll have: last year's colour specials. The big posters. Anything else that we've had in the past in limited quantities.

I'll show off the new t-shirt designs hopefully by the end of the week! (Waiting for photos of the finished shirts.)

Grayson

We found Grayson (or he found us) one very chilly morning as a tiny baby. He was infested with fleas & covered with blood. We found out he was anaemic, hypoglycaemic, & needed a blood transfusion. We rushed him to the animal emergency room while he was having seizures & he almost died quite a few times. They said he had a very small chance to live & would always have a neurological brain disorder. I’m so happy to say that after a week in the hospital, & over a year now at home with us, he is the happiest, healthiest kitten ever. You would never, ever know he is a bit of a “special needs” kitty!

Dear poptimists,
I am going to stay with my folks for a few days, where I will be largely cut off from the outside world i.e. the internet, which is an excellent opportunity to catch up on albums from 2009 that I have not yet caught up with. So far I have heard a few things that people have been shouting quite loudly about e.g. Electrik Red, Blaqkout, Rick Ross for some reason, and Silversun Pickups. Hmm... apparently I have only been listening to Lex and Moggy's advice so far this year. Any suggestions welcome.... and if I was to try and listen to something by this Michael Jackson fellow we've been hearing a lot about, I assume Off the Wall is the place to start? Thank you in advance,
yours with an enquiring mind

At Readercon (as in other venues) I was caught up in a conversation about Coincidence, and divination, prophetic dream, and all that class of experience, which it was generally agreed is only a function of noting or selecting from out of the vast and pelting river of experience those few items that are of interest to us, which stand out only because we note them.  I say it was agreed, but (as usual) somewhat dutifully, and even sadly.

Anyway today I was reading the Advance Reading Copy of Nicholson Baker's new book, which I'm to review, which is about a poet who is devoted to rhyme, and on an early page he quotes from Edward Lear, "The Pelican Chorus":

"Plumpskin, Ploshkin, pelican jill.
We think so then, we thought so still."

Then later in the day I open the new TLS and there in the "NB" snippets section, there's the same, quoted at slightly greater length, and differently punctuated:

Ploffskin, Pluffskin, Pelican jee!
We think no birds as happy as we!
Plumpskin, Ploshkin, Pelican jill!
We think so then, and we thought so still!"

So if any of you have recently been reading, or remembering, or thinking about, or opening an old childhood book (Nonsense Songs and Stories) and your eye falling on just that exact poem then we will have one of those astonishing, amazing coincidences, that wow must mean something, but what?

Nabokov called coincidence "A piece of pattern for which there is no use"  -- or something -- can anyone correct that for me?

Since it is now known almost everywhere, I reveal nothing in an untimely fashion by noting the passing of Charles Brown, eternal editor of Locus magazine, tireless chronicler of the SF/F world.  He was on his way home on the plane to California and died without fuss in his seat.

Charles interviewed me at Readercon:  I was his last Locus interview, oddly.  So much about death is odd.  Yet I can say that Charles Brown had what we in the Catholic Church called a good death:  having just visited and spent time among many he loved and admired, who returned his admiration, and who he knew were indebted to him for his long toiling in the vineyard, which I think did not seem like toil to him, and vanishing away on his return home again.  My own last image of him is stretched out, after a fine and lengthy dinner, on his bed in his hotel room, where I was being interviewed -- actually interviewing myself; he contributed remarks rather than questions -- with Peter Straub and the faithful Amelia.  I'd hope Locus might publish the whole of that recording, more conversation than interview; a last remembrance.

I start a course in co-op development today: “From Workers to Owners: Steps to Start Worker Cooperatives”. It’s part the economy and part the recent press our store has gotten, but we are getting calls or emails multiple times a week from people wanting to start co-ops. In addition to the cheese buying, one of my jobs is to field those calls. It’s an online course – and not a free one -- and I heard that 83 people are signed up.

I don’t want to out anyone before they are ready so I won’t name any places or details, but I talked to two incredibly different groups last week. One group of African Americans from an urban area in another state who want to do something – anything – that will help provide jobs and better health in their community. They were information gathering in general, without a specific plan of the type of model they wanted.

The other was an API ethnic group with a very specific idea of taking an existing, successful franchise model and converting it into a worker-owned version of the same thing. I don’t know that business model well, but they seemed pretty sure they could make it work.

It’s almost unfair to have people come for a tour and answer questions about our modes of operation since our blueprint for success is uncopyable. They see the result of nearly 35 years of work, starting in a totally different economy and era, with the good luck to be starting in an industry that – at that time – wasn’t an industry. I think there could be a blueprint. (The Cheeseboard/Arizmendi model is certainly a very good one) We just haven’t figured it out yet.

Historically-speaking I also speak to about 25 groups for every one that actually starts a co-op. I hope that this course – and two other Rainbow workers are taking it as well -- helps provide some groundwork to increase that ratio.

Walter

This is Walter just a few days after I got him. He is just six weeks old now. I had met him a few weeks ago when he just opened his eyes and could barely walk. He looked at me once and crawled all over me and started purring. He was very brave when I first took him home, not afraid of my resident cat, Charlotte, at all. He is determined to be her friend and is a loyal companion to me. He slept with me the first night I brought him home, valiantly climbing up the side of my bed with all his might. He is a wonderful friend that greets me at the door and attacks my feet. I love the little guy

I squished some of my fingers an hour ago, so typing sucks right now!

We're going to San Diego Comic Con next week! I'm a "Special Guest" this year, for the first time, which means I get to do some panels, and maybe you'd be so kind as to attend one or more of them.

Here they are, all three of them:

THURSDAY 12:00-1:00
Spotlight on Bryan Lee O'Malley:
Comic-Con special guest Bryan Lee O'Malley (winner of the Doug Wright, Joe Shuster, and Harvey Awards) talks with legendary comics scholar Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics, Zot!) about Bryan's groundbreaking slice-of-life graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim. From its genesis to the production of the upcoming film version, O'Malley speaks frankly about where Scott Pilgrim came from and where the series is going from here. With a fan Q&A to close the discussion, this is the must attend event of Comic-Con 2009! Room 5AB

(I hear "Room 5AB" seats 500. I have a feeling more than 500 people will show up. Get in early. Me, McCloud, comics, and maybe if you're really good I'll say one or two sentences about this little movie adaptation.)

THURSDAY 3:00-4:00
Oni Press: Panelmonium 2009:
Get up close and personal with trend setting indie comic powerhouse Oni Press. Join in the Q&A with your favorite Oni creators, including Ross Campbell (Wet Moon), Jamie S. Rich (You Have Killed Me), Greg Rucka (Whiteout), Bryan Lee O'Malley (Scott Pilgrim), and Chris Schweizer (The Crogan Adventures). Get sneak peeks at upcoming Oni projects, news on Oni Press fan initiatives, free Oni comics, prizes, and more! Guaranteed by Oni Press's totally biased employees to be "the most fun you'll ever have at a panel." Room 10

(I will be on this panel somewhat briefly and probably will not say anything important about anything, so if you're just looking for MOVIE INFO, go someplace else! This one's about comics!)

Here's the wild card:

FRIDAY 4:00-5:00
Graphic Novels:
Moderator Tom Spurgeon (ComicsReporter.com) talks to some of the superstars of graphic novels in this lively panel discussion. Joining Tom are Lewis Trondheim (Kaput and Zosky), Bryan Lee O'Malley (Scott Pilgrim), Seth (George Sprott 1894–1975), Gene Yang (American Born Chinese), Jason Lutes (Berlin), and Derek Kirk Kim (Eternal Smile). Room 8

(It's me, with acknowledged masters Trondheim, Seth and Lutes, plus comics' two other Asians! Oh my god, what? I have no idea what this panel is going to be like. Probably very interesting for you and terrifying for me.)

I don't have my signing schedule just yet, but I think it's going to be something like: late Thursday, midday Friday, and both of those periods on Saturday. I will be leaving on Sunday, and I won't be attending Preview Night on Wednesday, but you've got three days and approximately 5 1/2 specific hours in which to get stuff signed.

As I may have said earlier, there are going to be a few new t-shirt designs, hopefully, and new button designs which I've already shown you, and the rest of the TCAF prints, and I'm not sure what else is left over from olden times. I will be signing whatever you throw at me, but probably not sketching at all due to time and volume.

Samson

This is Samson. He is now a little over a year old. This is about a week after my boyfriend and I got him. The apartment was a bit lonely so we decided to get a cat last summer. This little guy was one of the many kittens just born outside at my boyfriend’s house at the time. He followed me all the time.

possibly i should start just doing a 'things i've heard on bobby friction' dump post at the end of the week or something (actually i did think we ought to maybe have a "werld music" thread at some point but i kind of find the idea of "world music" as opposed to anything else* offensive so idk idk) but having got up at 4r5e o'clock and walked four miles and being generally a bit miserable, this song just well pepped me up and is generally very, very ace in a sort of mildly black eyed peas fashion actually I realised there's two things i want to post, so cut time innit )

on a different note, i'm really sorry about the continuing absence of soulja boy hold'em aka ORGAFUN; i never got my internet connected in the house i was in before and am now, err, "no fixed abode" for at least a little while so i guess it's gunna have to be binned and maybe restarted in autumn or something, if i ever manage to actually live somewhere longer than ten minutes. sorry dudes! :(
